Statement of Intent:

At Harrietsham Church of England Primary School, we understand the importance of modern foreign language learning as a means to broaden children’s horizons and deepen their cultural understanding. We believe that the ability to speak and understand a foreign language is a highly valuable life skill that supports learning across the curriculum and provides children with a window into different ways of life outside of their familiar environment. At Harrietsham, our aim is to design an MFL curriculum that provides an opening to other cultures, fosters a curiosity and deepens the children’s understanding of the world.

Our focus of study in modern languages will be on providing a fun and nurturing space to develop the children’s confidence and skills for practical communication in French. This will include developing the children’s skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening, as well as developing accurate pronunciation. The teaching of French will enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts through the use of language-rich content such as French stories, poems and songs. Children will develop a broad range of vocabulary, which they will build upon progressively each year . At Harrietsham, MFL teaching will provide an appropriate balance of spoken and written language and will lay the foundations for further foreign language teaching at key stage 3.
