Statement of Intent:

At Harrietsham Church of England Primary School, our History curriculum aims to inspire and nurture children’s deeper understanding of the present by engaging with the past through an accessible, fun and challenging curriculum. Our school’s own rich history, within the context of our local area, is a celebrated and integral part of our school, enabling children to develop a deep understanding of the rich history and build relationships within our community. Our intent, when teaching History, is to spark children’s fascination with the past through an active and engaging curriculum. Thus enabling our children to engage with the process of change within a diversity of societies, through significant individuals and events, to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding of how the past influences and impacts their own lives.

Our History curriculum is shaped by our school vision; which aims to enable all children, to grow and learn together through our school community, in a secure, caring and fun environment, enabling children to flourish in their learning. Our History Curriculum is taught from the National Curriculum, supported by key skills and knowledge progression throughout each year group. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year, and children develop chronological, secure historical knowledge throughout different historical topics and periods of history. At Harrietsham CEP it’s our hope that our children develop their oracy skills, ask historical questions, find evidence from a source, weigh it up and reach their own conclusion. We believe it is important that our children have the key skills to continue to flourish and grow into great Historians.
