Statement of Intent

At Harrietsham Church of England Primary School, PSHE is taught through our Lifeskills curriculum which forms a part of our Personal Development curriculum.  It is at the core of what we do. PSHE / Lifeskills enables our children to become healthy, confident, independent, and responsible members of society. Through our PSHE teaching, our aim is to help our children to understand how they are developing personally and socially, whilst, tackling many of the moral, social, and cultural issues that are part of growing up.

Our PSHE / Lifeskills curriculum encompases a variety of categories:

  • Money Sense
  • Helping around the home
  • Caring for mysefl
  • Caring for others
  • Staying safe
  • Future Me and Enterprise
  • On the move
  • Understanding the law

It is our belief that excellence in these areas will lead to excellence across the curriculum and beyond in later life. PSHE is taught across the school from EYFS - Year 6 on a weekly basis; with further opportunities to deepen our PSHE knowledge through special events throughout the school year.

Weaving through the heart of our PSHE teaching, is a commitment to enhancing and promoting our core Christian Values; Love, Forgiveness and Fellowship.  PSHE reaches across every curricular area, as well as into every strand of school life. Our PSHE curriculum forms an important and intrinsic part of our school ethos.

We provide our children with a strong understanding of the diverse world around them and support them in developing their self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community, through opportunities such as; School Action Squad, Shining Lights and Play Leaders.

RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) is taught within our PSHE curriculum. Children will think about healthy relationships, puberty and problems arising from social media. In a rapidly changing world, children will need to be prepared to adapt and to make informed choices. This provides opportunities to enrich our delivery of PSHE in a creative way whilst, at the same time, helping our children to explore a wide variety of issues about themselves, others and their rights and responsibilities.
