At Harrietsham Church of England Primary School, our History curriculum aims to inspire and nurture children’s deeper understanding of the present by engaging with the past through an accessible, fun and challenging curriculum. Our school’s own rich history, within the context of our local area, is a celebrated and integral part of our school, enabling children to develop a deep understanding of the rich history and build relationships within our community. Our intent, when teaching History, is to spark children’s fascination with the past through an active and engaging curriculum, thus enabling our children to engage with the process of change within a diversity of societies, through significant individuals and events, to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding of how the past influences and impacts their own lives.
Our History curriculum is shaped by our school vision; which aims to enable all children, to grow and learn together through our school community, in a secure, caring and fun environment, enabling children to flourish in their learning. Our History Curriculum is taught from the National Curriculum, supported by key skills and knowledge progression throughout each year group. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year, and children develop chronological, secure historical knowledge throughout different historical topics and periods of history. At Harrietsham CEP it’s our hope that our children develop their oracy skills, ask historical questions, find evidence from a source, weigh it up and reach their own conclusion. We believe it is important that our children have the key skills to continue to flourish and grow into great Historians.

The content of our History curriculum is taught from The National Curriculum, supported by the identification of key skills and knowledge progression documents. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year throughout each year group. Thus, children develop chronologically secure historical knowledge throughout different topics and periods of history.
In KS1, History begins by looking at the children’s own personal history and introduces them to the idea of chronology and timelines. Then they will look at significant events and people who have shaped society, locally, nationally and globally.
In KS2, UK history is taught chronologically to allow children to confidently place each time period. This allows pupils to consistently build on previous knowledge and learning by placing previously taught History topics on a timeline.
Medium term planning for all units will cover key historical concepts and children are given opportunities, wherever possible, to study artefacts. We plan for effective use of educational visits and visitors, to enrich and enhance the pupil’s learning experience and the History curriculum.

Our History Concepts are key concepts within the History curriculum which we have identified as being important to our children's historical learning. These concepts run through our History Curriculum and are revisited and built upon at various points in our children's educational journey.
Our History Ready to Progress Criteria are the key objectives that we would like each child to have mastered before moving onto the next year group curriculum. Without mastering these Ready to Progress Criteria, the children may develop gaps in their learning.
