Physical Education (PE)

Statement of Intent

Here at Harrietsham Church of England Primary School, we hope to nurture and inspire a love of PE in every child through the teaching of high-quality physical education lessons, underpinned by the National Curriculum.  Sport is essential for every child’s development. Our PE curriculum, aims to ensure that every child has the opportunity to experience a broad variety of traditional and non-traditional sports. Our curriculum is diverse and we look to include key sporting events, within our learning, ensuring children experience sport beyond the normal curriculum. Lessons are planned in detail, in a sequential and progressive way to ensure that children learn the specific skills within the unit, as well as progressively through the years enabling the child to flourish as a learner. Children will develop physically, through the participation and learning of skills and the leadership of others. They will also develop cognition, social and emotional aspects of PE, these are vital in developing an all round learner who can both physically and orally communicate how to improve and develop within the subject. Children will also learn the importance of respect and fairness by experiencing competition within school and against other schools, alongside beating their personal bests. We hope to enthral children to participate fully in the next stage of their education as well as to play sport beyond the school gates.

Implementation

Our whole curriculum is shaped by our school vision which aims to enable all children (regardless of background, ability and additional needs) to flourish and become the very best version of themselves, that they can possibly be. Children will learn through the teaching of high-quality physical education lessons, encouraging everyone to be the best they can be by instilling perseverance, self-motivation and the strength to keep going. Our PE curriculum ensures that the children have the opportunity to experience a broad variety of traditional and non-traditional sports. This is achieved through teaching and opportunities beyond the curriculum. The skills will be learnt through both participation within lessons and through the leadership of others. Children will learn the importance of respect and fairness by experiencing competition within our school, they will compete against themselves, striving to achieve their best each year in termly competitions. Children will also participate in intra house competitions against the other houses and finally be given the opportunity to compete against other schools (inter-competition).

Impact

By the time children leave our school they will understand the impact that Physical Education has upon them, and be able to articulate that PE is good for the body and great for the mind! Children will have had the opportunity to experience a variety of fun sporting activities and have developed physical, cognitive and social and emotional aspects of PE. They will understand the impact sport can have on their wellbeing. They will have learnt the value of competition at a personal and competitive level. With the end goal being to enthral children to participate fully in the next stage of their education as well as to play and engage with sport beyond the school gates.

PE Subject Concepts

Our PE  Concepts are key concepts within the PE  curriculum which we have identified as being important to our children's physical education learning.  These concepts run through our PE Curriculum and are revisited and built upon at various points in our children's educational journey.

PE Ready to Progress Criteria

Our PE  Ready to Progress Criteria are the key objectives that we would like each child to have mastered before moving onto the next year group curriculum.  Without mastering these Ready to Progress Criteria, the children may develop gaps in their learning.
