Design & Technology (DT)

Statement of Intent

At Harrietsham Church of England Primary School, children receive a D&T curriculum which allows them to exercise their creativity through designing and making. Knowledge and skills are taught progressively to ensure that all children are able to learn and practice, which will allow them to develop as they move through the school. Evaluation is an integral part of the design process and allows children to adapt and improve their product, this is a key skill which can be applied throughout their lives. As children peer-assess work, children will develop our school value of fellowship as they learn to help others develop.

D&T allows children to apply the knowledge and skills learned in other subjects, such as Science, Art and PSHE; as well as outdoor learning, where children can test their products in a real-life environment. Children’s interests are captured, ensuring that links are made in a cross curricular way, giving children motivation and meaning for their learning. Children will be equipped with the skills to become risk takers and innovators and will have used a range of tools, resources and materials to create effectively constructed and aesthetically pleasing results. This provides children with not only a sense of achievement but a strong foundation for the next steps of their learning and key skills for life.

Implementation

Children are taught to work using the ‘Design, Create, Evaluate’ cycle.

Each stage is rooted within technical knowledge, whether this relates to physical mechanisms, cooking methods or working with particular tools, materials and equipment.

While projects generally have a specific ‘end goal’, emphasis is also placed on incorporating children’s own ideas into the design process at any opportunity. Time is taken to ensure that children have an appreciation of the potential risks of working with different tools and materials and are able to manage these risks successfully to create products in a safe, hygienic way.

Being an environmentally conscious school, children are encouraged to create products in a responsible fashion, ensuring that resources are used considerately.

Impact

Our Design and Technology curriculum enables and encourages our children to becomes critical thinkers. At Harrietsham, our children learn to take risks, become resourceful, innovative and enterprising individuals. Children learn to be passionate and excited by the designing and making of products including working with, preparing and tasting food.

DT Long Term Plan

The document below gives details of the DT Topics that each year group are planning to cover over the course of the school year.

DT Long Term Plan

DT Subject Framework

Our Framework gives details of all of the areas of DT that we would want an Age Expected child to have mastered at the end of each term. Click the link below to view the DT Framework for each year group within our school.

DT Subject Framework

DT Subject Concepts

Our DT Concepts are key concepts within the DT curriculum which we have identified as being important to our children's design and technology learning.  These concepts run through our DT Curriculum and are revisited and built upon at various points in our children's educational journey.

DT Ready to Progress Criteria

Our DT Ready to Progress Criteria are the key objectives that we would like each child to have mastered before moving onto the next year group curriculum.  Without mastering these Ready to Progress Criteria, the children may develop gaps in their learning.
