Welcome to Hedgehogs Class
My name is Mr Walker, the class teacher. In the morning I am joined by Ms Martinez and in the afternoon by Mrs Jones, these are our LSAs here to help us! On Thursdays, the class is taught my Mrs Frost with Mrs Richardson as the LSA. We are very happy to be in Year 1 and helping the children to grow and have fun with their learning!
What happens in Year 1?
In Year 1, we build upon the key skills that were taught in Reception. We also develop the elements of Mathematics and Literacy that the children were introduced to last year. It is important that the children feel settled into Year 1 in order to be effective learners, therefore the transition is planned to be gentle, with play times being gradually reduced and learning times being gradually increased. The aim is for this to take place over the Autumn term.
For a full view of the year curriculum, please see the termly curriculum sheet at the bottom of this page.
Children will be given a reading book to bring home with them along with a red reading journal. As and when the children have finished reading their book at home, the children are encouraged to write a sentence or draw a picture in their journal about their book which we then ask Parents or Guardians to sign. The children then bring their journal to school to allow us to monitor their reading and enable the children to change their reading book. It is recommended that children read every night and complete any reading related tasks in their reading journals.
Journals are collected on Friday mornings for checking by the teacher, they will be returned to the children by Friday afternoon.
Busy Books & Homework
The children have been given yellow busy books in which they can complete tasks given to them to complete at home. A weekly overview will be placed inside the busy book to keep parents updated on what the children have been doing in school. In addition, the spellings for the week ahead and homework challenges will be provided for children to complete and share in class when finished. Spelling tests occur every Friday.
Busy books are collected every Friday morning for checking by the teacher.
The aim of Year 1
The overall aim of this year is to develop the children’s knowledge and understanding of skills they have been introduced to. However, we want the children to have fun in school and enjoy their learning. Our lessons aim to be engaging, fun and accessible for all. To do this, we may take our lessons outside, share lessons with Squirrel Class or involve different areas of the classroom. We hope you and your child will enjoy this year.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any queries.
